For almost 100 years Prysmian cables and systems (formally known as Pirelli Cables) has been designing, manufacturing, installing and maintaining High Voltage and extra High Voltage Cable Systems throughout the UK and the rest of the world.

When it comes to maintenance and repair of existing fluid filled or polymeric insulated cable systems in the UK there is no other company who can claim to have greater experience that Prysmian. Our company has been installing and maintaining pressurised fluid filled cable systems and Polymeric cable systems since their first introduction into the UK.

Mobile High Voltage Testing Capabilities

High voltage tests are often required prior to returning a cable circuit into service following replacement of major components, such as cable terminations or cable joints or the diversion of an existing circuit.

Prysmian are able to perform a full range of tests on a cable circuit whether as part of fault diagnoses or routine maintenance performed in order to avoid a fault and hence a forced outage occurring in the future.

Mobile Testing Facilities Include:

High Voltage Testing

  • High Voltage (HV) DC testing at voltages from 10kV to 710kV.
  • High Voltage AC Testing at voltages from 50kV to 300kV
  • Partial Discharge Monitoring on termination and joints while energised by the AC test equipment.
  • On line partial discharge monitoring of circuits on load.

Low Voltage Testing and DC Testing up to 15kV

  • DC Conductor Resistance Tests
  • Sheath Resistance and Continuity Checks
  • Contact Resistance Measurement
  • DE PE Oversheath testing at up to 12kV
  • Oversheath Fault location.
  • Insulation Resistance measurement
  • Cable Sheath Voltage Limiter- Tests for correct operation up to 15kV.
  • Cable cross bonding verification checks
  • Impedance Measurements   

Partial Discharge Monitoring

In addition to partial discharge monitoring being performed during the performance of high voltage tests, Prysmian are able to offer non-contact partial discharge monitoring while equipment is in service utilising our own specially developed Prysmian Prycam partial discharge detection equipment.

The detection and analysis of partial discharge occurring while equipment is in service provides advanced warning of potential failure, enabling corrective action to be taken thus avoiding the danger and expense which could result from catastrophic equipment failure.

Fluid Filled Cable Leak Detection

As part of our complete on -site cable maintenance capability Prysmian is able to offer cable fluid leak detection via our PFT solutions methodology.

PFT stands for Perfluorocarbon Tracers. These highly volatile compounds with excellent insulation properties are added to the cable fluid in minute quantities. Where the cable system fluid sealing integrity is damage the cable fluid containing the PFT tracers leaks into the cable surround and permeates through the ground. As the PFT compounds enter the free air they can be detected by use of Prysmian’s sophisticated detection equipment and hence the location of the fluid leak can be determined.

Prysmian are able to offer the complete PFT injection and detection service in addition to possessing all the specialist manpower, materials, knowledge and techniques necessary to repair the leak in the shortest possible time.

Prysmian are able to inject and detect two different variants of PFT which can be invaluable when two or more circuits are routed in close proximity.

Circuit Reinstatement

Prysmian in the UK are able to offer full repair and maintenance services on fluid filled and polymeric insulated cables for operating voltages up to 400kV.

Our company’s long history in the supply, installation, repair and maintenance of high voltage cable systems, working with many different clients within the UK, makes us fully aware of the critical importance of returning a power cable circuit into service as soon as possible following a circuit outage.

Whether the outage is planned or the result of a fault or third party damage Prysmian’s clients can be assured that Prysmian have all the resources necessary to re-instate the circuit to full commercial operation quickly and economically, addressing diagnostics, repair and testing, without compromising the future integrity of the circuit.

Prysmian in the UK has stocks of materials, design, diagnostics, jointing engineering functions, operational and civil engineering personnel, offering the best possible full, one stop shop, service for circuit reinstatement.

We have a large fully trained UK jointing work force currently comprising of 35 High Voltage Cable Jointers and 9 Fluid Mechanics. All Prysmian jointing operatives have undergone training and certification in Prysmian’s own purpose built training school. Prysmian cable jointers also undergo regular refresher training within the Prysmian jointer training school in order to ensure that Prysmian’s high standards are being maintained.

Our site jointing operatives are supported at site by Prysmian project engineers and from head office by Jointing Engineers, Cable Designers, Cable Accessory Designers, high voltage technologists and our logistics department with its extensive holding of special jointing tooling and materials.

Jointing and engineering personnel are trained, authorised and equipped to work under induced/impressed voltage conditions, thus enabling reinstatement work to take place with the minimum of disruption to the wider system.

Our high voltage cable and accessory manufacturing facilities and expertise enables Prysmian to identify and provide all the materials required to reinstate the circuit to commercial operation.

In order to expedite the reinstatement into service of 132kV cable systems where a catastrophic fault or irreparable third party damage has occurred, Prysmian hold in stock, under the “XLPE Express” scheme, 132kV express cable and associated accessories. This enables the section of damaged cable to be replaced by a new economic short length of cable and two joints, or a joint and a termination, without the cost and delay associated with ordering a minimum order quantity of cable.
