The Prysmian FP cable range

Once it has been established that fire resistant cables are required for a premises, the next step is to determine which cable is most suitable for the  application. Prysmian offers an extensive range of “Standard” and “Enhanced” fire resistant cables that are independently tested and certified.

“Standard” fire resistant cables are required to achieve at least 30 minutes circuit integrity when tested in accordance with BS EN 50200 and to BS EN 50200 ANNEX E.

“Enhanced” fire resistant cables are required to achieve at least 120 minutes when tested to BS EN 50200 and BS 8434-2.

The most prominent Prysmian FP cables are FP200 Gold, FP PLUS and FP600s. 

FP200 Gold

Building regulations are legal requirements and require that fire risk assessments must be carried out. As a result, fire alarms and emergency lighting systems are usually a requirement for public buildings with multiple occupants such as shops, offices, schools or transport hubs like airports and train stations.

FP200 Gold is a “Standard” fire resistant cable specifically designed to meet the requirements of BS 7629-1 as necessary for fire detection, fire alarm and emergency lighting systems in buildings.

FP200 Gold is suitable for the following applications:

• Fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings
• Emergency and escape lighting
• Emergency voice communication
• Voice alarm systems
• Other essential service control circuits for “Standard” fire resistance
• Category 1 control circuits for life safety & fire-fighting systems

FP PLUS

FP PLUS is an “Enhanced” fire resistant cable  specifically designed to meet the requirements of BS 7629-1, as necessary for fire alarm and emergency lighting in buildings. FP PLUS is the ideal choice for hospitals and large, complex buildings.

FP PLUS is suitable for the following applications:

• Fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings
• Emergency and escape lighting
• Emergency voice communication
• Voice alarm systems
• Other essential service control circuits for “Enhanced” fire resistance

• Category 1 and 2 Control circuits for life safety & fire-fighting systems with suitable mechanical protection 

FP600s

FP600s is an armoured power cable with special fire-resistant properties making it the ideal choice for power supplies for life safety and fire-fighting systems. These applications include fire-fighting lifts, smoke and heat exhaust ventilation systems and sprinkler pumps.

Prysmian Group develop and manufacture FP600s at its UK factories in compliance with BS 7846, achieving the highest fire performance rating of 120 minutes, when tested in accordance with BS 8491.

FP600s is suitable for the following applications:

• Smoke and heat exhaust ventilation systems
• Fire-fighting and evacuation lift supplies
• Smoke barriers, control dampers and smoke curtains
• Extinguishing systems – sprinkler pumps, water mist and powder

FP600s is designed to be clipped directly to a surface, on tray, in basket or in free air. The cable can also be laid direct in ground or in ducts in ground, provided the soil is free draining or embedded in concrete. 

FP cable accessories

FP cables are required to maintain circuit integrity to power emergency systems in the event of a fire, so it is vital that the accessories used to fix FP cables do not prematurely fail and do not reduce the fire performance of the cable.

All FP cables should be fixed securely to the building structure to retain their circuit integrity during fire. British Standards codes of practice require non-combustible, permanent cable fixings that will not melt, burn or perish and so secure the cable in place. Whilst any fire resistant cable must continue to operate, fixings must also prevent the collapse of the cables in a fire, to reduce the entanglement risk to emergency personnel.
