Powering Future Connections

HS2 is Britain’s new high speed railway that will become the backbone of the UK’s rail transport network. Connecting towns in the South, the Midlands, and the North, HS2 will provide faster, easier and more reliable travel.

Prysmian Group is powering these future connections by manufacturing and delivering the best quality products to ensure these railway systems are more efficient than ever before.

As a high-speed rail line connecting the South, Midlands, and the North, HS2 works will bring more investment and jobs to the UK, as well as improving connectivity between our major cities. Major civil engineering works are now underway, with £23 billion contracted into the supply chain and over 350 active sites between the West Midlands and London supporting 27,000 jobs. Phase 1 – London to the West Midlands

Phase 2a – West Midlands to Crewe

Phase 2b Crewe to Manchester. (Extra funding could be made available for extension towards Leeds.)

Prysmian Group the market leader of cable systems

Our cable solutions equip transport vehicles and infrastructures around the world, whether it’s enhancing power and control capabilities or enabling the optimal functioning of data and communication systems. We can be relied upon to manufacture and deliver:

  • A sustainable and dependable supply: Products are manufactured and designed in the UK for consistent use on and off the tracks. It enables us to reduce our carbon emissions and be more sustainable.
  • Safer, simpler complete systems: We plan, design, test, manufacture and deliver cable that protects and enhances lives
  • Proven expertise: Prysmian is the world’s leading cable manufacturer and has proudly powered global projects for over 140 years

We can supply a range of products that will power up and create better connections across railway networks, especially in the construction of stations and tunnels, rolling stock and railway systems.

Prysmian Group products make the ideal solution for stations, tunnels and general construction for rail infrastructure. We manufacture a range that includes low voltage building cables (LV cables), medium voltage power distribution and track feeder cables (MV cables), and for fire safety systems the renowned FP cable range. Prysmian Group manufacture a full range of cable accessories including cable glands, cable fixings, cable cleats and the Connecta System for lighting and small power applications in tunnels. Prysmian Group telecommunication and data transmission systems include optical fibre cables and also copper cables that support existing networks.

The construction of HS2 tunnels will be one of the most challenging aspects of the HS2 project. The tunnels will be excavated in a number of different locations along the route, and some will run at depths of up to 90 metres (300 feet) below ground. A combination of specialised tunnel boring machines, deep excavators and high-powered drills will be used to construct the tunnels. Tunnel boring machines which are prevalent in HS2 construction enable tunnelling under towns and cities without disturbing anyone above the ground. The HS2 tunnelling operation also helps reduce the impact on the countryside. Prysmian Group cables that are used within HS2 tunnels will revolutionise travel across the UK, connecting the six largest cities in Britain.
